Prof. Krayenhoff receives the Ontario Early Researcher Award

Simulated average afternoon air temperature at pedestrian height across the Toronto region during a hot summer month (Hesse, 2025).

Prof. Krayenhoff has been awarded an Early Researcher Award from the Government of Ontario. This highly competitive award comes with substantial funding, which will be used for research on urban heat risk. Specifically, these funds will be used to train two graduate students in the Urban Climate Adaptation Lab and achieve a number of research objectives: 1) locate neighbourhoods in Toronto and London (ON) with the greatest heat exposures (accounting for air & surface temperature, shade, humidity, wind) using advanced climate modelling; 2) locate heat vulnerable populations that reside in hot neighbourhoods; 3) simulate the effectiveness of a variety of heat adaptation infrastructures for mitigating outdoor and indoor heat exposure of heat vulnerable residents, including: street trees, green roofs, cool roofs, engineered shade structures, rooftop solar panels, reflective pavements, street gardens, and pavement watering.
